How to reply to a specific message on Hinge

The feature, in four taps. Then the harder part: what to put in the reply.

To reply to a specific message on Hinge, open the conversation, press and hold the message you want to answer, and tap Reply in the menu that appears. The message is quoted above your text box and your answer is sent attached to it, on both iPhone and Android. A quick tap opens emoji reactions instead, which is the most common reason people think the feature is missing.

The four taps

  1. Open the match thread.
  2. Press and hold the message you want to answer. Hold for about a second. A menu appears above the message.
  3. Tap Reply. The original message is now quoted above your text box.
  4. Type your answer and send. It shows up in both threads with the quote attached.

On recent versions you can also swipe right on a message to quote it, the same gesture as iMessage and WhatsApp. If a swipe opens something else, the app is out of date.

When it does not work

You tapped instead of holding. A quick tap opens the emoji reactions bar. Reactions are not replies; hold the message instead.

The app is old. Quoted replies arrived in 2023 and the gesture has changed since. Update Hinge from the App Store or Google Play, then try again.

It is a voice note or a like. Voice prompts and prompt likes cannot be quoted. Reply normally and name the thing you are answering in the first few words.

It is glitching. Force-quit the app and reopen it. This fixes more Hinge problems than any other step.

When to quote and when not to

Quote a message when the thread has moved on and you are coming back to something: a question they asked two messages ago, a detail you want to pick up, a joke worth continuing. The quote tells them which thread you are pulling.

Do not quote every message. A thread where every reply carries a quote reads like a forum, not a conversation. If you are answering the message they just sent, just answer it.

Do not quote to correct them. Quoting a message to point out an error is the texting equivalent of “actually”, and it reads that way.

Now, what to put in it

The feature is the easy part. Most Hinge conversations do not die because someone could not find the reply button; they die at message three or four because the replies answer the question and add nothing. Every reply should answer and add: answer what they asked, then give them something to pull on.

We wrote the long version: what to say after matching on Hinge, how to keep a Hinge conversation going, and how to text on Hinge. If you would rather practice than read, a Mock Chat is a 24-hour texting thread with a real reviewer playing a new match, graded at the end.

Replying on Hinge: questions people ask

How do I reply to a specific message on Hinge?

In the conversation, press and hold the message you want to answer. A menu appears above it; tap Reply. The original message is quoted above the text box, and your answer is sent attached to it. You can also swipe right on a message to quote it on recent versions of the app.

Why can't I reply to a specific message on Hinge?

Three common reasons: the app is out of date (update it from the App Store or Google Play), you tapped instead of holding (a quick tap opens reactions, a press-and-hold opens the menu), or the thread is a voice note or a prompt like, which cannot be quoted. Restarting the app fixes most of the rest.

Can you reply to a specific message on Hinge on Android?

Yes. Press and hold the message, then tap Reply. The gesture is the same on iPhone and Android; only the menu styling differs.

Does the other person see that I replied to a specific message?

Yes. Your reply shows the quoted message above it in both your thread and theirs, so they know which message you are answering.

Can I react to a message on Hinge instead of replying?

Yes. A quick tap on a message opens emoji reactions. A reaction is fine for a joke that doesn't need words; it is not a reply, and a thread of reactions is how conversations die.

How do I reply to a like comment on Hinge?

When someone likes a photo or prompt and adds a comment, their comment appears at the top of your new match thread, quoted. Your first message is already a reply to it; answer the comment directly instead of opening with 'hey'.

Your replies are fine. Is your profile?

A real reviewer reads the whole thing the way a match would, then tells you what to change. From $20, back in two to three days.
